Description

“Mandili’s Nachreli” — Traditional Khevsurian Cross-Stitch Pattern

“Mandili’s Nachreli” is a uniquely restored traditional Georgian folk embroidery pattern. This design has been meticulously reconstructed from the seminal ethnographic work “Khevsureti” by the renowned Georgian ethnographer, Sergi Makalatia.

In traditional Khevsurian culture, the Mandili (woman’s headscarf) and its ornamentation played a sacred, social, and aesthetic role. “Nachreli” refers to a carefully hand-embroidered0 ornamental border that adorned the edges of traditional garments, including shirts, faragi (traditional tunics), headscarves, and collars.

🏛️ Ethnographic Symbolism & Ornamentation

The ornamental band combines two classic, archetypal elements of Khevsurian embroidery:

  1. “Dakavkauli” (Interlocking Hooks): A dynamic, zig-zag, geometric system of interlocking hooks. In folk symbolism, it represents continuity, strong bonds, apotropaic (protective) functions, and the continuous flow of energy.
  2. “Rkamokhrili” (Curved Horns): Spiral/horn-like terminals. In ancient Georgian and Caucasian iconography, the horn motif symbolizes fertility, eternal life, strength, and prosperity.

💡 Crafter’s Tips (Nima Studio)

  1. Transferring onto Clothing (PVA Soluble Canvas): With a height of exactly 17 rows, this pattern is perfectly proportioned for shirt sleeves, collars, denim pockets, and tote bags using water-soluble canvas (PVA Canvas).
  2. Technique Selection: You can stitch this design using traditional Cross Stitch or authentic Khevsurian Dashibva (embossed satin stitch), which imparts a denser, raised, and historically accurate texture to the embroidery.
