Easily Calculate Required Fabric Size or Stitch Count

Before starting any cross-stitch project, every stitcher faces two fundamental questions: “What size fabric do I need to cut?” and “How many skeins of embroidery floss will I need?”

We’ve all been there—cutting a piece of fabric without calculating first, only to realize later that it’s too small for framing, or running out of a crucial thread color right in the middle of a project.

That’s why I created free online calculators at patterns.com.ge, designed specifically from real stitching experience to take the guesswork out of project planning and prevent wasted materials.

1. Stitches → Size Calculator (Canvas Size)

How it helps: It calculates the exact dimensions of fabric you need to cut so your finished embroidery fits beautifully into a frame or finished piece with proper borders.

What data you enter:

  • Design width and height in stitches (found on your pattern chart);
  • Fabric type and count (e.g., Aida 14, Aida 16, Aida 18, or Linen/Evenweave);
  • Framing margin (extra centimeters/inches needed on each side for framing or finishing).

Example:

If your pattern size is 140 × 200 stitches on Aida 14:

  • 14014=10inches (approx. 25.4cm)
  • 2001414.3inches (approx. 36.3cm)
  • Adding a 5 cm margin on all sides gives a final cut fabric size of approximately 35.4 × 46.3 cm.

2. Size → Stitches Calculator (Target Dimensions to Stitches)

When to use it: When you have a specific frame, pillow cover, or pre-cut piece of fabric and want to know the maximum stitch count your design can have to fit perfectly.

What data you enter:

  • Desired design size in centimeters (e.g., 2525cm);
  • Fabric count (e.g., Aida 18 count / 7.1stitches/cm);
  • Framing margin (5–10 cm recommended).

Real Example from the Calculator:

If you want to stitch a 25 × 25 cm design on Aida 18:

  • The calculator instantly tells you that your design should be 177 × 177 stitches.
  • Including a 5 cm border, your total cut fabric size will be 35 × 35 cm.

💡 Why are Framing Margins Essential?

Fabric edges fray during stitching. Additionally, framers need extra fabric to pull, mount, and secure your work properly inside a frame. Cutting too close to the stitched border almost always ends in heartbreak and ruined work!

3 Golden Tips for Selecting Fabric

  1. Pre-treat before cutting:
    If your fabric needs washing or ironing, do it before cutting, as some fabrics shrink slightly when exposed to moisture and heat.
  2. The effect of fabric count:
    The higher the fabric count number (e.g., Aida 18 vs. Aida 14), the smaller the stitches and the smaller the overall finished piece.
  3. Calculate before you cut:
    Running your numbers through an online calculator before making that first cut saves fabric, time, and money.
